Outlast 2: Review

Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower are my favorite scary games, so I was a little bias about Outlast 2 when I started to play it. When I played the first Outlast it was understood that while they did not have the best graphics, there was still a great story behind the game. I played both Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower through to completion at least twice. The one thing that I liked about the games was that you had to run away or hide from the characters in the games that wanted to kill you. You were not able to fight or try to kill the characters in the game. All you had with you on your trip to Mount Massive Asylum is a camera so you are able to see in the dark. Along the way you are able to pick up documents which talk about certain projects that are happening in the asylum like project Walrider.

When I heard that Outlast 2 was going to take place in the Supai region of the Coconino County region of Arizona, I was stoked. This is something so new from the other games that I was very excited to play in a totally new area. In the game you are Blake Lagerman and you are accompanied by your wife Lynn, who is also with you when your plane crashes. You were looking for a young Jane Doe who was pregnant wandering around the area in which you are flying to. When Blake wakes up from the crash he is unable to find his wife Lynn, and sets out in search of her in this strange new place. Blake soon learns about Papa Knoth(he runs Temple Gate) and the cult that is in this area which wants to kill him. Papa Knoth claims that Lynn is pregnant with the Anti-Christ, which in turn needs to be killed. Through out the story you are looking for your wife Lynn and making sure that she does not die and the baby is not killed. While you are doing so, you learn about the fate of the girl who was pregnant whom you were investigation.

The first thing that I thought was very cool about this game was that they made the camera more important this time. Instead of always picking up papers along your travels, this time you record events around you with your camera. They end up being very important along the way because then you are able to find out how Outlast 2 is connected to the first games. While it might seem like at first Outlast 2 is in no way connected to the first two games, you are wrong. I also thought that since this was in a new area it wouldn’t be connected to the other games, but they are in fact. Outlast 2 also takes place in the same universe as the first two games, so that is also something to keep in mind.

Outlast 2 is more open world in the game, so sometimes it can be hard to find your way around, especially if you are low on batteries. It’s easier this time to hide from your enemies because you are now able to hide in the tall grass and water that surrounds the area, though it is harder to see them coming at you. Sometimes you can see their eyes through the camera, but this is not always the case. The only thing that I did not like was I felt this time around, the camera was not as good. Most of the time that I was looking through the camera I felt that it was very blurry. When I played the first Outlast and the DLC, I did not have that problem. Another cool feature that they added was they made it so you are able to find bandages and use them. While this is great, it stinks when you are trying to run away from someone trying to kill you because you are unable to move while using the bandages.

The controls of the game are very clean the other two games. Sometimes that I’m glad about because I typically will not spend much time on a game if they do not have clean controls. The graphics were also very good. You are mostly outside so much of what you are seeing is hard to determine. You might think that you are going the right way, and in turn lead to a dead end or even more people who want to kill you. You have to be strategic about where you are going to make sure that you end up in the right place. While I liked that most of the people that are trying to kill you are just that. People. The first game, they were deformed and that made it scarier for me personally. This time around, I felt that I was not as scared because most of the time these people looked normal. Also, some of these people area able to find you no matter what, like Chris Walker so it is pointless to try and hide. This is one thing that I did not like about the game, I felt that personally they shouldn’t be able to find you that easily.

Overall, I think that Outlast 2 was a very good game, the only problem that I did have with it was that in order to fully understand the game you need to make sure that you collecting all the videos. I did not understand the game at first because I did not collect all the videos, so I had to look some stuff up. But, otherwise I think that it was a great sequel, and one that I would totally recommend to anyone who loves horror games. Also, I will make another in depth post about the story of the game which will obviously contain spoilers and what I thought about it. So, keep an eye out for that!
